LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Drivers in Louisville will get some relief at the gas pump.

Mayor Craig Greenberg announced Thursday that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will remove of the decades-old requirement to use reformulated gasoline in Jefferson, Bullitt and Oldham counties.

Kentucky lawmakers have pushed the federal government for years to eliminate the RFG requirement to give Kentucky drivers and businesses a break.

"This is a huge win that has the potential to save Louisville drivers $137 million per year," Greenberg said in a social media post.

The change will go into effect May 27, the mayor said.

The requirement has led Louisville drivers to pay as much as 35 cents more per gallon than surrounding counties and other parts of the state.

"At a time when costs are too high for Americans, I am proud that we are able to deliver some relief for Kentuckians by having the RFG mandate removed for Louisville," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release Friday. "Reformulated gas was costing Kentuckians 10 to 25 cents more per gallon, which now can go toward groceries, rent and other things that matter to our families. I am grateful to the EPA for approving this request and for local leaders who helped raise their voice to support this much-needed change."

The RFG requirement began in the 1990s to decrease air pollution, but advances made in fuel technology, vehicle efficiency and environmental regulations have made the requirement unnecessary, the release said.
