LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A road improvement project aimed at boosting public safety is coming to south Louisville, particularly along Southern Parkway.
The project is set to address ongoing traffic concerns, including speeding and congestion.
The intersection of Southern Parkway and Woodlawn Avenue, which connects five different streets, has long been a source of confusion for drivers.
It's known as a tricky intersection. The intersection looks like a star and causes some traffic issues.
Ronnie Miller, a longtime resident of Southern Parkway, shared his frustrations about the increasing speed of traffic.
"The traffic speeding is getting worse all the time," said Miller, who’s lived in the area for a decade. "We just have cars going excessively fast."
The project, which is part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All Initiative, is being funded by a $21 million federal grant aimed at improving 10 corridors across Metro Louisville. The planned upgrades will include reducing the four-lane street to three lanes with a new turn lane.
Miller said there's a congestion problem.
"The traffic backs up so when that light changes, we have a lot of traffic coming this way, making it hard for people who live on the Parkway to get out from side streets," Miller said.
The project is designed to improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians. A key focus will be the complex five-point intersection at Southern Parkway and Woodlawn, where semi-trucks often struggle to navigate the turns.
"I think it's just awkward to know who is supposed to be going when," said driver Jeffrey Dehut, who added that while traffic lights are in place, the situation remains confusing.
In addition to lane adjustments, the project will include enhanced street lighting to improve visibility, although Miller said, "Lighting is not an issue, you're talking maybe 50 yards in between the posts."
The project is slated to begin next year and is expected to take approximately six months to complete.
Miller, who hopes the changes will reduce traffic speeds, stressed the importance of safety.
"If they can control the speed, they can control the problem," he said.
A public meeting to discuss the Southern Parkway project is scheduled for April 9 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Beechmont Community Center.
