LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell was released from the hospital Wednesday eight days after experiencing "flu-like symptoms."

A spokesperson for the longtime Republican senator said Tuesday that McConnell, 83, as sent home after his condition improved. He checked himself into a local hospital for evaluation Feb. 3.

"Senator McConnell was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is grateful for the outstanding care he received," his spokesperson said. "He is feeling better and will be working from home this week on the advice of his doctors."

McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, announced last February he would not seek reelection this year and instead retire when his current term ends in January 2027.

The senator has dealt with a series of medical episodes in recent years, including injuries sustained from falls and times when his face briefly froze while he was speaking.
