LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Shively Police Department is offering free gun locks to promote safer firearm storage.
Residents can pick up a lock at the department's main office on Park Road from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday this week, while supplies last.
Shively police said it's part of an initiative to make sure families, especially those with young children, are safely storing their firearms in the home.
Police said safe gun storage is one of the most effective ways to keep guns out of the hands of children and prevent accidental shootings.
Gun owners should aways store guns unloaded, police said, with the ammunition stored separately whenever possible.
