LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Former NBA star Monty Williams will speak at Southeast Christian Church later this month.
According to a news release, the event, dubbed "Main Event," is an outreach of the church's men's ministry, and will take place on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 27, at the church's Blankenbaker Campus at 920 Blankenbaker Parkway.
Williams is the former head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans NBA basketball team, and currently serves as the vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs.
His life was hit by tragedy last year when his wife, Ingrid, died after her car was struck head-on by another vehicle that had lost control. Williams is expected to draw on his life experiences to speak on "overcoming adversity and being stronger together."
"We're excited to offer this event to celebrate men, bring all men together, laugh together, and have a conversation with Monty that matters," said Ronnie Cordrey, men's minister at Southeast, in a statement.
While the event was created specifically to focus on reaching the men of the community, a spokesperson for the church says it is open to everyone. It will begin at 5 p.m. and will include food, music and games, including a 1/2-court shot competition with Williams at 6:45, pop-a-shot, corn hole, inflatable boxing and jousting and top golf. Each game will include a point system, and attendees with the highest scores can enter to win four tickets and field passes to the U of L / Clemson game, or four tickets to a UK football suite.
The program itself will begin at 7 p.m. Chris Burke, a former MLB baseball player and St. X graduate, will conclude the program at 7:40 p.m.
