Southern Indiana businesses making anti discrimination statement in face of new law

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- This business serves everyone. It's a simple but powerful statement some companies in southern Indiana are sharing.

It's in response to the recently passed and controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Stickers with the statement are popping up at businesses all over southern Indiana so you don't have to go inside to know all are welcome.

"We don't discriminate," Regalo's Laura Applegate said. "We welcome everybody into the store."

The "Open for service" sticker went up in the window at Regalo on Saturday, sending a strong message to those shopping in southern Indiana.

"Canceling trips to Indiana, you're hearing boycott Indiana," Applegate said, "It's important for people to know that we love everybody."

The stickers are all over downtown New Albany and they're part of an online campaign started by an Indianapolis man who says he started printing the stickers after the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was signed into law.

So far, they've sold more than 4,000 stickers to businesses in 30 states and seven countries.

It now takes two weeks to get a sticker because the back log or orders.

Cake baker Morgan Coomer hasn't received her sticker yet, but put a virtual copy on the Facebook page of her Jeffersonville sweet shop.

"I think we're much more caring than the governor seems to make us out to be," Coomer said.

Despite criticism, Indiana Governor Mike Pence is defending the law, but also says he plans to fix it.

"The smear here against the bill is that it created a license to discriminate and deny services and that's completely false and baseless," Pence said.

As someone who makes wedding cakes, Coomer says keeping an open door policy is important for business.

"We did a same sex marriage exactly like we do any other wedding," she said. "It was no different for us. It's the same as any other wedding."

Proceeds from sticker sales go to a nonprofit that helps small businesses.
