LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It has been more than a year since a road rage shooting on Interstate 65 left a Louisville girl unable to walk, and the three people charged in Onyx Sands' shooting are scheduled to stand trial next year.
Onyx Sands was in the backseat of her father's car when she was shot in July 2023. Now 7 years old, she's is paralyzed from the waist down and will be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
Three suspects were arrested -- Shelby Bisconer, Jonathan Rivera, and Edward Sark. Their trial is now scheduled to start in September 2025. However, Sark's attorney claims he's not competent enough to stand trial, and has filed for an evaluation.
It could take up to 15 months to get the results.
If the competency evaluation isn't complete in time, the trial could be delayed for a third time.
Rivera's lawyer, Jaret Hill, said he plans to file a motion for a separate trial because the wait is "a massive inconvenience" since his client is on home incarceration.
"He can't even go grocery shopping, he can't cut his hair, can't go to a doctor, can't take his kids to or from school," Hill said. "I mean, everything is a challenge for us now."
