LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- UofL Health is the first hospital system in Kentucky to use a new technology to treat liver tumors.

The new technology, histotripsy, uses ultrasound waves to destroy liver tumors during a non-invasive, outpatient procedure. UofL Hospital is only one of 89 worldwide using this technology, the company said in a news release Thursday.

Histotripsy uses the power of micro-bubbles to destroy tissues without using radiation, heat, incisions or needles like in traditional treatments.

The histotripsy technology has been studied for more than 20 years, including studies in U.S., Europe and the United Kingdom, where the technology was successful in eliminating primary and metastatic liver tumors.
