One committee room had multiple leaks in the ceiling. Trash cans were placed around the room to catch the water. Staff also covered microphones with plastic bags to protect them.
A House spokesperson told FOX59 News they're looking into the extent of the damage, and attributed it to a leak after heavy snowfall.
"We are working with the Indiana Department of Administration to assess the extent of the damage and any precautions that may need to be taken," the spokesperson said.
For the first time in at least 20 years of legislative sessions, the House decided not to convene Monday because of inclement weather. All committee meetings originally scheduled for Monday were also postponed.
The damage wasn't discovered until Tuesday morning.
"This institution is quite used to dealing with chaos," Rep. Craig Haggard, R-Mooresville, said. "I think that we're still running efficiently. I don't think it will put us back too much, and if we have to stay a little longer, that's what we have to do."
The House has the option to hold a special Friday session if deemed necessary.
