LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The death of a woman found dead of a gunshot wound at a southern Indiana home is under investigation, but police believe it was an accident.
In a news release, Indiana State Police in Sellersburg said the Washington County Sheriff's Department was called just before 9 a.m. Sunday to a home on Mt. Carmel Road in Fredericksburg on a report that a woman had been shot.
When deputies arrived at the woman's home, they found the body of Heather D. Lawson, 32, of Fredericksburg. Washington County medical examiner Dr. Bill Ralston confirmed through an autopsy that she died of an apparent gunshot wound.
ISP detectives said their preliminary investigation shows the shooting was the result of an accidental discharge of a weapon, however, the case remains open.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department, the Washington County Coroner’s Office, and the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.
