Officers believe one of the vehicles was traveling on I-264 near the Dumesnil Street and Virginia Avenue off ramp when it was side-swiped by a wrong-way driver.

It happened around 12:15 Monday afternoon in the area of 17th and Garland. 

The man was rushed to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. 

It was not immediately known what type of weapon was used in the stabbing. 

The boy was taken to Norton Children's Hospital in critical condition, but Ruoff said the child's condition was later upgraded to stable.

The monuments were unveiled outside the department's Second Division offices, where both officers — Officer Peter Grignon and Detective Deidre Mengedoht — served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

The victim is now paralyzed from the neck down and is expected to be on a ventilator for the remainder of his life, according to court records.
