LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The game was nearing its close. Louisville City FC had already claimed the lead, dug in defensively, and looked poised to return to the top of the USL standings. Then came another memorable moment.
Cameron Lancaster stood at the sideline.
The club’s all-time leading scorer stepped back onto the Lynn Family Stadium pitch in purple. And the crowd of 8,147 rose to greet him.
“It felt really good,” Lancaster said. “… To set foot in this amazing stadium again was special.”
A lot about LouCity feels that way right now. With its 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the club extended its unbeaten start to 11 matches — the best opening run in team history — and vaulted into first place in the USL Championship standings.
“Being (at) the top of the table is what we want,” said forward Phillip Goodrum, who opened the scoring early. “… But it’s a marathon.”
Even so, LouCity made its sprint to the front look intentional. The team pressed high and struck twice in the first 20 minutes — Goodrum’s finish off a pinpoint Aiden McFadden cross, then a takeaway goal by Ray Serrano. That was enough.
Tampa Bay’s Woobens Pacius pulled one back in the 31st minute with a brilliant solo goal. But the Rowdies, despite dominating second-half possession, couldn’t find another. LouCity’s defense held. Its goalkeeper, Damian Las, wasn’t forced into a single second-half save.
“We spoke about making sure that we started the game on the front foot, and we certainly did that,” coach Danny Cruz said. “… All in all, I was absolutely ecstatic with how the group defended collectively.”
Lancaster’s return only sweetened the night. The 31-year-old striker — a two-time Golden Boot winner with Louisville — rejoined the club this week on loan from Lexington SC. His entrance was a moment: a burst of cheers, a reawakening of memory.
“His attitude has been fantastic,” Cruz said. “He understands the cultural expectations here at the club… I know he’s happy to be back.”
So is LouCity — back to winning early, back to defending late, back to a spot in the standings where the air is familiar.
The club returns to action quickly with a home match Wednesday against Rhode Island FC — a playoff rematch from last fall. Kickoff is at 8 p.m., and it's Youth Sports Night at Lynn Family Stadium.
