LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Kentucky Derby and Oaks-winning jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. is one step closer to recovery after undergoing successful surgery Monday to stabilize multiple broken ribs suffered in a spill at Churchill Downs.
Hernandez, 39, posted an update from UofL Hospital Monday evening on social media, writing:
“I had a successful surgery today to stabilize my ribs. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers! The doctors and nurses here at U of L have been absolutely fantastic. Hopefully one step closer to going home.”
The veteran rider was seriously injured Sunday when his mount, Sgt. Garcia, broke down nearing the far turn of Churchill’s third race and threw him to the ground. Hernandez was transported to the hospital with seven broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a lacerated liver. He underwent an immediate surgical procedure to repair his liver.

Trainer Kenny McPeek confirmed to Blood Horse that Sgt. Garcia, a 2-year-old colt sired by 2018 Kentucky Derby contender Audible, was euthanized after being vanned off the track. Specifics on the horse’s injury were not released. He was making his third career start.
Hernandez's wife, Jamie, said Sunday that the family was hopeful but preparing for a difficult road to recovery. Monday's update marked a positive turn.
The timing is especially difficult for Hernandez, who was set to ride Derby winner Mystik Dan in this week’s Lukas Classic and is also the regular rider for Kentucky Oaks winner and 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna.
McPeek announced that proceeds from a special bottle of Elkwood Reserve bourbon, commemorating Thorpedo Anna’s2024 campaign, will go toward Hernandez and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
