NEW ALBANY, In. (WDRB) -- A historic church in New Albany will host a Juneteenth celebration.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser visited the landmark that was a station on the Underground Railroad.
The Town Clock Church, now the Second Baptist Church in New Albany, was constructed in 1852 as Second Presbyterian Church. At the time, New Albany was the largest city in Indiana.
The church is brick, and is constructed in the Greek Revival style of architecture. It had a 160-foot high clock tower that could be seen by boat crews on the Ohio River.
Recently, an extensive restoration project gave the old church new life. The steeple was replaced and the clock tower was restored with bells tolling every hour and half hour.
A new apartment building and meeting space was erected and completed next door to the church in 2023.
It was a station on the Underground Railroad.
The Underground Railroad was an organized network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved Africans and African Americans to escape from slavery as early as the 16th century.
The celebration will honor the history of Juneteenth and the contributions of a Civil War Hero, Lucy Higgs Nichols.
The guest speaker for our 2025 Juneteenth event is Eileen Yanoviak, author of "The Tenacious Nurse Nichols" An Unsung African American Civil War Hero.
Enjoy the sounds of the Guest Minister of Music, Troy Bell and an inspiring performance of the Keen Dance Theatre.
