LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- House plants can bring some life inside your home and can help keep you healthy.
If you're a beginner to house plants, there are some extremely low-maintenance plants that don't need much light and also don't need a ton of water.
The best first time house plant is a Pothos plant.
"These are going to be the ones that last through the apocalypse," said Jeff Wallitsch of Wallitsch Gardens. "The Pothos and the Twinkies will be the only things left on the shelf. So they're very tough. Water every two to three weeks. They can tolerate low light but they can also tolerate high light, just as long as its not direct sunlight."
Next up is the ZZ plant. It has similarities to a succulent. It can tolerate very low light and only needs to be watered every three to four weeks.
The Snake plant also has those same needs. It's considered to be one of the best plants to have in your bedroom as a natural air purifier.
"It helps you sleep," Wallitsch said. "It gets rid of a lot of the toxins in your home too. And all of the house plants will actually get rid of toxins that we have in our home."
The Bird's Nest Fern takes a little more care but is still relatively easy to keep alive.
"... like maybe 10-14 days of watering," Wallitsch said. "And it will need a little bit more light It's going to be medium to high light."
When these plants do need to be watered, Wallitsch recommends putting them in your sink, water them through, let them drain and you're good to go.
