LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- You might not be thriving in the heat and humidity of summer, but there are some plants that love this weather.

“Tropicals are great season extenders. A lot of times people will put early spring plants in, they'll be getting a little tired looking around this time of year, but tropicals thrive in the heat and the humidity that we have here in Kentucky,” said Jeff Wallitsch, of Wallitsch Gardens.

Tropical plants start off slow growing when it’s still considered cold for them in the spring, but then they start thriving in the heat of summer. So you might be wondering if they need more or less water?

“It’s going to just depend on what plant it is. There are a lot of tropical plants that are succulent-like,” Wallitsch said. “So they wouldn’t necessarily need as much water. But then there are some that need to be watered on a daily basis. It just depends on which one pick.”

When in doubt, read the plant tag. However, the Dipladenia plant can be considered foolproof.

“If you forget to water them, the like you. And if you water them too much they still like you,” Wallitsch joked.

Tropical plants also offer a different and more unique look and texture than other plants. And they can survive up until we get a hard frost or you can bring the plants indoors over winter.

“Just make sure they're getting light and water and then you’re going to stick them outside the first minute that it gets warm. And then they kind of revitalize and will last all summer again for you,” Wallitsch said.
