LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – There can be so many rules when it comes to flowers and plants.
Full sun ... partial sun ... watering preferences. Sometimes it can be too much to remember. Jeff Wallitsch, with Wallitsch Gardens understands that feeling and picked out some “Jeff-proof” flowers for you.
Sun Plants
Wallitsch said your best bet is picking flowers that love humid weather, which is perfect for the Louisville area.
Lantana is colorful, attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and blooms all summer long.
Salvia is quite hardy and comes in many colors.
“If you go on like a week’s vacation in the summer, this guy would be totally fine in a pot or the ground. Something where you don't have to constantly water all the time,” Wallitsch said.
Dipladenia has a tropical look and can also survive harsh summers.
Then Euphorbia and the Kimberly Queen Fern, which can be a sun or shade plant, add some texture. They round out his top five sun plants.
Shade Plants
Hostas and heucheras are both very low maintenance.
“Shade is sometimes hard for things that flower. So this does flower early spring, but what you can do is have the texture and the foliage colors in your containers or in the garden. So that’s why I like to do the heucheras and hostas because they come in so many different colors,” said Wallitsch.
And of course Hydrangeas add a pop of color and various mini ferns add some nice texture.
Wallitsch said typically your sun plants like to get watered every day or every other day. Your shade plants can go longer at two to three days.
