LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Everyone has their specific questions when it comes to their garden needs. Wallitsch Gardens is helping you tackle your concerns, from the best way to keep your plants alive to getting cats to stop using your garden bed as a litter box and everything in between.

What are the best plants to grow in full sun that come back every year?

“Great question. So some of my favorites are the perennial Salvias. They’re going to bloom all summer long. If you trim them back, they can flush back out and rebloom for you. So I love all the different Salvias,” Jeff Wallitsch said.

He adds that Coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans are also great options that love the heat and humidity.

How do you keep a Sky Pencil Holly alive?

“The Sky Pencil Hollies are more what I’m going to call a high-maintenance plant. You have to make sure they have really good drainage and really good soil," said Wallitsch. "So if you’ve tried planting them and they don’t really work, don’t get discouraged because there are always some great substitutes. Those are the Columnar Juniper, Columnar Boxwoods, Columnar Arborvitaes, if you want that tall skinny look.”

When it comes to Ferns, how do you keep them looking healthy and alive?

“Ferns love humidity and they love moisture,” Wallitsch said. “A good pro tip is (to) actually take them and dunk them in a big bucket of water. Let them kind of soak for a while. And then, I’ve also learned that to get all of that debris out of it, take your blower and just give your fern a good blow out. And then it’s all fresh and ready to go. You can hang it back up.”

How do you keep cats from pooping in garden beds?

“It is a great question. So there’s a couple things. The first thing is that you can plant strong-scented plants in your garden. Those are things like mint, peppermint, and lavender,” Wallitsch said.

He also suggests adding a thick layer of mulch or rocks in the beds because it adds a sharper texture that cats typically will not want to dig in.
