LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Kentucky girl was recognized by the U.S. Military for her strength and service.

Maribel Sikes, 17, of Fort Knox, was named Military Child of the Year, representing the Army during Operation Homefront's Military Child of the Year Award Gala Thursday night in Washington, D.C., according to a news release.

The award is given to young people who make a positive impact in their communities, military families and their schools.

Sikes' story is one of resilience and service. She has experienced 12 changes of station as a military child. While her father was stationed in Japan, Sikes founded a youth volunteering organization, serving with the Red Cross and helped improve childhood literacy.

She also logged more than 1,500 volunteer hours last year while battling severe food allergies, often working and supporting others who have similar health conditions.

Sikes is one of seven young people recognized. Each recipient receives $10,000, a laptop and other gifts.

This is the 17th year for the award.
