LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Renovations are underway at the Baxter Community Center, which has been serving Beecher Terrace residents since 1940.
The Louisville Metro Housing Authority gave a behind-the-scenes look Thursday at the continuing transformation of the community hub. The expansion includes essential upgrades like a new roof, modernized fire and security systems, enhanced WiFi and energy-efficient windows and doors. The project includes a 4,500-square foot-expansion with new reception and lounge areas.
"Whenever I talk to people from the Russell neighborhood, this has always been a gathering place, a cornerstone," said Elizabeth Strojan, executive director of the Louisville Metro Housing Authority. "And so we want to make sure that's the case for many years to come."
Louisville leaders broke ground on the $11 million expansion in December 2022. The project, which was paid for with a grant from Choice Neighborhoods, is set to be complete by this summer.Â
