West End School holds "Read-In Challenge"

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- West End School is celebrating Black History Month a little different this year - by reading books.

The school held a "Read-In Challenge" on Thursday morning where students were offered a unique opportunity to connect with real-life models who embody the spirit of Black excellence.

The school is utilizing the reading program to show their students that they can be anything they want to be.

Distinguished members of the community came to the school and shared their insights and experiences with the students.

"Being able to have local politicians and local business owners read to you in your school, and then finding out that they literally came from the same community just means a lot," West End School President Dr. Greg Ross said.

By celebrating Black history, the school is able to build a more inclusive and culturally aware school community.

The West End School is expected to have several other Black History Month programs throughout the February, including an essay contest and a billboard design competition designated by each grade.
