LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The YMCA of Greater Louisville is launching a water safety program ahead of swimming pools opening for the summer.
The Swim Equity initiative is a free hour-long safety clinic to introduce children and adults to swimming and water safety practices, according to a news release Tuesday. YMCA is also providing information online and on social media to increase community engagement around water safety practices.Â
The clinics will be offered for free at all Louisville area and southern Indiana YMCA branches May 15-18. No previous swimming experience is required for participants.
According to a news release, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 and the second for those ages 5-14. Around 4,000 children die each year in the U.S. from drowning related incidents.Â
