LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The countdown to the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby continues, and people headed to the track this year have been getting a head start on their attire.

From the outfit to the all-important headpiece, when it comes to Derby 150 fashion, this year, everything is bigger and bolder.

Fashion is an undeniably big part of Derby Day. Each year, race-goers are decked out, hoping they stand out under the Twin Spires. And people are paying closer attention when it comes to fashion for this historic Derby.

"Everyone is taking this one so much more seriously than any other year," said Diana Wallace with Him & Her Boutique.

Wallace said customers started shopping extra early this year to find the perfect Derby look.

"I think this year, with it being the 150th Kentucky Derby, it is more about spending your time on something special, something different, dressier," she said. "We've been seeing a lot of that. People want something that's a little more elevated."

When it comes to colors, this year's favorite probably won't surprise you.

"The  No. 1 color they've been asking for is red," said Ross Wallace with Him & Her Boutique. "The red has been so popular, I guess, especially for 150."

The same trend has emerged with hats and fascinators. Ilana Kogan, known as the "Hat Doctor," a full-time radiologist who uses this side hustle to fuel her creativity, has been hard at work hand-crafting her amazing headpieces.

"Reds and greens are very big this year," Kogan said. "I think a lot of people want to echo that beautiful red rose."

Kogan said they have almost 1,500 headpieces this year, the most ever,

"Everyone's going all out this year," she said. "Bold colors, all the little details, a little bit of bling."

Kogan is known for her high-fashion designs that push the envelope. And they've been in high demand here in Louisville and across the country.

"People are really excited about their outfits this year," she said. "So they really want that standout, gorgeous piece."

The Him & Her Boutique has two locations: one at 4206 Summit Plaza Drive in Louisville and another at 313 Pearl St. in New Albany.

Kogan's headpieces are available for purchase online
