LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  For many, Christmas is a time for joy, family, and celebration. But for some, it’s a time of struggle and searching for hope.

In Louisville, Wayside Christian Mission transforms the holiday into a beacon of light for those in need, hosting an annual Christmas celebration that feeds the hungry, gives gifts to children who might otherwise go without, and reminds everyone that their lives matter.

The event, held in a grand ballroom of a converted hotel, is a testament to community and compassion. Every table is filled with people whose stories inspire resilience, hope, and gratitude.

A Life Reclaimed

Marcus Penn, a former client of Wayside Christian Ministry joined the staff, he embodies the spirit of redemption. With an infectious smile and a powerful presence, he shares his journey from the bright lights of football to the shadows of addiction.

“I played safety at Saint Paul University, then transferred to Morgan State and later to Gretna Stone Semi-Pro,” he recalls.

But after his athletic career ended, Penn found himself battling addiction and eventually living on the streets.

“I was sleeping behind a dumpster in Virginia when a woman asked if I wanted help. She told me about a program in Kentucky. I didn’t know what I was getting into, but I said yes,” Penn says.

That decision led him to Wayside Christian Mission, where he not only found sobriety but also a new purpose.

“It saved my life. Now, I’m in school to become a therapist. I’m growing in ways I never thought possible,” he says with pride.

A Welcoming Place for All

Jennifer Burnett’s story is one of resilience despite life’s hurdles. Homeless and without her family this Christmas, she found solace in Wayside’s celebration.

“It’s been a long struggle,” Burnett admits. “I wanted to cry because I’m not back home with my family or my grandkids. But I knew they wouldn’t judge me here.”

Burnett, like so many others, found warmth and acceptance at Wayside’s holiday event, where the only requirement is a willingness to come inside and sit down.

The Heart Behind the Mission

For Nina Mosley, director of Wayside Christian Mission, the holiday extravaganza is a labor of love.

“We’ve been doing this for 36 years, and it gets bigger every year,” Mosley says.

Starting at 5 a.m., Mosley and her team of volunteers prepare a feast: turkey, ham, all the trimmings, and an abundance of desserts.

“We do this because holidays in a homeless shelter can be a low point in someone’s life. We want to bring them normalcy and let them know the community cares,” Mosley explains.

Her dedication shines through as she coordinates the event, ensuring every guest feels valued and welcomed.

A Room Full of Smiles

As guests enjoy their meals, the joy in the room is palpable. Laughter, stories, and gratitude fill the air. For Mosley, moments like this affirm the importance of the mission.

One look at the smiles across the ballroom is proof that Mosley and her team are on the right track—making Christmas a season of hope and renewal for those who need it most.
