LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you are looking into selling or trading in your car in 2024, Kentucky drivers will need to hold onto their license plates.

Previously in Kentucky, license plates would go with the vehicle, if selling or trading it in. With the new KAVIS system that is rolling out at the beginning of the year, it will link drivers to the license plates and registration tags instead of vehicles.

"This new way will help not only bring Kentucky in line with practices already present in other states, but also comes with a number of benefits for drivers," Bobbie Holsclaw, Jefferson County Clerk, said in a news release on Thursday.

Drivers' plates can be reassigned to any other vehicle they own, including a new vehicle, if purchasing one.

Drivers can still purchase a new plate at the Motor Vehicle branch if they choose, but keeping the same plate gives perks like retaining their current registration, keeping the same plate number, and if you have a combination special to you, you won't lose it.

This new model only pertains to unexpired registrations. If it's an expired registration, the plate will need to be given to the Clerk's Office and a new plate will be issued.

Some restrictions do apply; historic plates can’t be transferred to a car under 25 years old and passenger plates can’t be put onto heavy trucks.

Customers with questions about the changeover are encouraged to reach out to their local branch before completing their transactions.
