LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Airfares are heading up now for Thanksgiving and Christmas week travel as planes fill up. So if you are looking for a cheap flight, basic economy may seem like the answer.

Some downsides follow if you opt for the basic economy.

With basic economy, you usually aren't allowed access to the overhead bins. So everything you pack has to fit into a small bag that can fit under the seat in front of you.

Seats usually are assigned once you get to the gate, not in advance like normal. You also are usually towards the back of the plane, near the bathrooms, and you board the plane last.

On top of all that, you don't earn points with your basic economy ticket. That means no Delta SkyMiles, no AA Advantage, and no United Mileage Plus points.

If you are looking for the absolute cheapest way to get somewhere, basic economy is the way to go. But if you're wanting all the travel perks, you'll have to pay a little extra.
