LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Planning a road trip in the near future? You may want to take a minute to see if your car has a spare tire or not.

Automakers started removing spare tires over a decade ago and replaced them with small air pumps.

Eliminating the spare lightens up the load in the car to help improve fuel efficiency, but some cars also don't have room for a spare tire.

These days, only 10% of vehicles come with a full-size spare.

Many come with a temporary "donut" tire, while others come with cans of "Fix A Flat" or an air pump.

A lot of people out there may not realize this, so it's important to know.

Dealers can charge hundreds for a spare tire, so the best places to look for an inexpensive option are AutoZone, Walmart, or other parts stores.
