LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- January has been colder than normal for much of the country this year, which means your February energy bill could be higher than ever.
Luckily, there are some things you can do to try and halt that price hike on your bill.
A home energy audit can find leaks around your windows, fireplace, and doors, causing cold air to come in and your furnace to keep running.
Caulking around old windows and adding insulation in the basement ceiling and around window wells is recommended.
For doors, a simple fix of a rolled-up towel against the bottom of the door will help.
Another thing to check is your furnace and have it serviced to try and stump bills. A dirty filter would mean a higher bill.
An annual maintenance visit and a filter change is important to keep up with.
Additionally, switching to a smart thermostat that you can easily adjust when you are out makes a big difference.
Every 2 degrees lower saved 5% on your heating bill, according to the Department of Energy.
