LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A popular Louisville market is back in business after historic flooding forced it to shut down for the second time this season.
Haymarket, located on River Road near Zorn Avenue, has reopened just weeks after more than five feet of water inundated the store. The flooding came after a wet winter and spring that pushed the Ohio River well beyond its banks.
“It has been quite a journey,” said Haymarket CEO Annie Cobetto. “The effort to remediate this entire five acres that we sit on has been tremendous, and I’m very proud of our team.”
The market’s building was designed to withstand flooding to an extent, but the recent high water overwhelmed some precautions. Staff worked quickly, taking about 48 hours to remove as much equipment as possible before the water rose.
During the closure, Haymarket replaced its wooden floors with concrete and expanded its offerings, including a new event space and updated menu items.
The store, known for its fresh produce, meat, and local goods, uses a unique system that floods its interior with clean water in order to keep the mud and most debris outside.
Though customers are already returning, Haymarket will hold an official grand reopening on Saturday.
