LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Women in the Smoketown neighborhood now have access to free period products.

For Lady's Sake unveiled Saturday it's new, free period pantry. It's on the fourth floor of the Family Health Centers building at 834 East Broadway.

The nonprofit organization's goal is to end period poverty through direct product distribution, community education and legislative advocacy.

Executive Director Reina Kempt said the period pantry has everything women and girls might need, including pads and tampons.

Volunteers can come into the space to help separate and pack period products into kits. The pantry then distributes the kits to people in need.

Kentucky is one of more than a dozen states with a "pink tax." That's a 6% state sales tax on menstrual products.

Candice Crawford, For Lady's Sake Founder, said people who can't afford pads and tampons often miss work or school because of their period.

"By really expanding the knowledge about period poverty, we are ending that shame and stigma," she said.

Kempt said For Lady's Sake hopes to eventually get free productions into more schools and government buildings.

Since its founding, the nonprofit has distributed more than 60,000 period products and served more than 3,000 women and girls throughout the region.

The new pantry supports For Lady's Sake's growing network of distribution initiatives. This includes the Period Pod and Little Libraries Initiative, which are outdoor cabinets stocked with free hygiene and period products.

These outdoor cabinets are accessible to the community around the clock throughout Louisville.

For Lady's Sake constantly needs more donations to keep the pantries and cabinets stocked. If you'd like to donate items, time or money, click here.
