LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- City leaders are making another push for investment in downtown Louisville, and Mayor Craig Greenberg said some initiatives may depend on receiving money from the state.
During his weekly media address Tuesday, Greenberg referred to the new $90 million Derby City Gaming facility as a great example of investment that helps improve downtown Louisville. He said the city can continue to make similar investments but needs help from the state's rainy day fund.
"Right now, we have a very robust and bold plan in front of the Kentucky State legislature on how they can invest in downtown Louisville to continue this momentum that we're seeing," he said Tuesday. "And it will provide an incredible investment return on investment."
The push to focus dollars, energy and work on downtown is happening ahead of a busy spring. The city will host visitors from across the country for the 150th Kentucky Derby, the PGA Championship and other events.
Greenberg said it's important for state legislators to approve more money for investment in downtown Louisville, which will go to help business, housing and development projects.
The mayor also mentioned the $12.5 million expansion of Waterfront Park, a multimillion-dollar proposal to renovate the Belvedere, and noted that more restaurants and shops are choosing to locate downtown.
Greenberg said lawmakers should consider all those factors and direct more state funding to the city's center.
The mayor even teased a new downtown festival they plan to announce soon, but there's no word yet on what that may be.
