LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The city of Charlestown is trying to raise funding for a new pocket park in southern Indiana.
The city has a goal to raise $50,000 by Jan. 25 through a crowdfunding campaign. If the campaign is able to reach that goal, Charlestown will receive a matching grant as part of the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority's CreatINg Places Program.
"Many Hoosiers are facing a loneliness epidemic. Creating welcoming public spaces where individuals of all ages can gather is crucial to a community's health and quality of life," Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Indiana's secretary of agriculture and rural development, said in a news release. "This project illustrates how small spaces can have tremendous impact and become a point of pride for the community."
According to a news release, the funding will be used to create a parklet along Short Street. The project plans to enhance the City Square in Charlestown as a central hub for events, fairs and Charlestown Christmas City.
"We're excited to kick-start this fundraising opportunity to help us build a beautiful addition to our city square," Charlestown Mayor Treva Hodges said in a news release. "Jennings Plaza is a place where we keep our small-town vibe alive through a
variety of community events and adding this parklet will help us be more creative in how we engage with residents and visitors."
DA Inc. made the first donation to the project. The manufacturing company in southern Indiana pledged $10,000. According to a news release, Charlestown was one of 13 rural Indiana organizations to participate in the a Rural Placemaking Studio initiative through Indiana University.
