LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former Nelson County fire chief was "suspended indefinitely" after being charged with abuse of public trust and official misconduct.

The Rolling Fork Fire Department Board of Directors suspended Chief John Skaggs earlier this year. Last week, he was indicted for abuse of public trust, official misconduct and theft.

Skaggs is accused of misusing public money and property, in part, for filling up his personal vehicle using a fire department gas card.

The fire department's treasurer spoke Tuesday about what prompted leaders to take a closer look into Skaggs.

"In the paying of bills, we noticed some things that were abnormal and, following up on them, we realized there was a problem," Frank Hall, Rolling Fork Fire Department Treasurer, said. "We took the problems to the board of directors, and the board of directors suspended Mr. Skaggs as chief."

Hall said Skaggs was suspended indefinitely.

Jail records show Skaggs was arrested June 8 following his indictment, and was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

He's scheduled to appear in court June 18.
