LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police confirmed that two officers fired their guns during a fatal shooting in the Portland neighborhood on Dec. 14.

LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said officers were called to a home in the 400 block of North 25th Street around 8:45 p.m. on the report of a domestic incident. The caller told dispatchers a family member was pointing a gun at people in the home, including a child, and said they believed the person was "intoxicated on possible narcotics."

Once on scene, police heard loud arguing coming from a room upstairs, Gwinn-Villaroel said. Officers "attempted to have a conversation" with the individuals in the room. As the situation escalated, officers forced entry, and shots were fired. One person died and another is critically injured.

LMPD spokesperson Angela Ingram said LMPD confirmed two First Division officers, Shaine Edmondson and Jeffrey Goldman, fired their weapons. Neither officer has any commendations or disciplinary history, according to LMPD.

Police have not clarified if officers broke down the front door or were already in the home, or if the deceased had a gun or who fired the fatal shots.

Body camera footage of the shooting will be released within 10 business days, per the department's new protocol, the chief said.

Anyone with information about the shooting, or anyone who may have video of the incident, is asked to call LMPD's anonymous Crime Tip Line at 502-574-LMPD (5763). Tips can also be submitted anonymously online through the department's Crime Tip Portal by clicking here.

This year, police have been involved in eight shootings. Two people have died as a result. The police shooting Thursday wasn't only the eighth in the city in 2023, but the third in five weeks.
