LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man is facing charges after police said he was driving while intoxicated with a child unrestrained in the car and caused a crash.

Tula Bharati, 30, is charged with assault, two counts of wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and failure to use a child restraint.

Louisville Metro Police responded to an injury crash at the intersection of Newburg Road and East Indian Trail around 3:15 p.m. last Monday, March 10.

According to court documents, a 17-year-old girl was driving south on Newburg Road when Bharati failed to yield at the green light and made a left turn in front of her. The teen was taken to Norton Children's Hospital with severe leg injuries that required surgery.

The citation said Bharati had a 6-year-old in the car with him that was not restrained, causing the child to be ejected into the front seat of the car, receiving minor injuries. Bharati was taken to University of Louisville hospital where hospital staff noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, and said he was "very combative."

According to his citation, Bharati's blood alcohol level was 0.155, two times the legal limit.

This is not the first time Bharati has been arrested for DUI. Court documents show he has had two prior DUI convictions.

Bharati was arraigned and plead not guilty. He is being held in Metro Corrections on a $10,000 bond, and also had his license suspended. He is due in court again on March 24. His mug shot was not available on Metro Corrections' website.
