LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are investigating after a man who was hanging on the outside of a vehicle died when he was hit by another car.
Officers were called to the area of South 4th Street and Winkler Avenue around 7 p.m. on a report that a person had been hit by a vehicle, LMPD spokesperson John Bradley said in a statement. That's not far from the University of Louisville.
The Louisville Fire Department also responded. Once on scene, officers found a man dead in the roadway.
Police believe the man was "hanging on the outside of" a vehicle that was driving down South 4th Street near Winkler Avenue.
Police initially said the driver of the vehicle "reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic intentionally," hitting another vehicle. That caused the man to collide with that vehicle, causing fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
In an update Friday morning, police said that driver was not responsible for his death.
The driver of the vehicle the man was hanging out of fled on foot, but was later apprehended in the area of 7th Street and Algonquin Parkway and taken into custody, Bradley said.
LMPD's Homicide Unit and Traffic Unit are investigating. There were no other reported injuries, according to Bradley.
