LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police are investigating after three Lexington police officers shot a suspect on Tuesday.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Alumni Drive and Yellowstone Parkway in Fayette County.

According to KSP, officers from the Lexington Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop on an individual with outstanding felony warrants out of North Carolina.

During the "attempted" traffic stop, KSP said three LPD officers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Albert B. Chandler Hospital in critical condition.

KSP said a firearm was recovered from the suspect's vehicle after the shooting, and no officers were injured.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting and what led up to it are unclear as the investigation unfolds.

KSP has statewide jurisdiction and investigates police shootings at the request of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

No additional information was immediately available.
