LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A suspect in a fatal shooting was taken to the hospital after being shot by police in Louisville's west end, according to police.

Louisville Metro Police responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of Cypress Street around 1 p.m. after a female was shot multiple times. She later died at the hospital.

LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said police identified a suspect and canvassed the area of the shooting. Police found the suspect in an alley near where the shooting happened around 3 p.m.

Humphrey said as officers approached the man, he fired at officers. Police shot back at the man.

The man was shot by police at least one time after a short foot pursuit, according to Humphrey. The suspect was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Humphrey said there is body camera footage from the shooting, which will be released in 10 business days. LMPD's Public Integrity Unit will investigate the shooting.

No police officers or other citizens were injured in the shooting, according to Humphrey.

"I'm extremely thankful that we have these officers out here willing to do this work every day," Humphrey said. "This is our second officer-involved shooting in less than 24 hours where officers were shot at and able to protect the community."
