LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville nonprofit is launching its fifth year of an educational initiative that supports children affected by gun violence.

Christopher 2X's Game Changers has devoted resources to supporting children impacted by gun violence with the Future Healers program, which is a partnership between the Game Changers, UofL Hospital's Trauma Institute and students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to help Louisville children who have been impacted by violence in their neighborhoods to build a better future.

The Future Healers program has expanded substantially since it started in 2021. The program is expanding to Bardstown, the first rural expansion in the state. The program for children ages 4 to 13 years old has already expanded to Nashville.

Bardstown Elementary School, the nonprofit Our CommonWealth and Flaget Memorial Hospital's STEMP program partnered with Christopher 2X Game Changers to bring the program to Nelson County. There will be 330 elementary-age students in Bardstown participating in the program this year.

“My visit to Bardstown Elementary School, Our CommonWealth, and Flaget Memorial Hospital showed me just how wholeheartedly our new partners are embracing the Future Healers curriculum," 2X said in a news release. "Their enthusiasm and commitment to making these sessions exciting, fun, and educational for the kids truly reflects the spirit of this program.”

The Future Healers Journey to Wellness workbook will be utilized by Bardstown children. It's a 100-page book that blends fun and learning activities for a unique resource that focuses on wellness and health sciences. University of Louisville School of Medicine students authored the book.

In 2023, the program expanded to Nashville with doctors from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and nonprofit Stronger Than My Father to help form The Future is NOW (Non-violent Options Win). Last fall, it expanded to three JCPS elementary schools to expose more students to health sciences. Earlier this year, the program expanded to Bardstown, the first rural expansion in the state.

The Future Healers program now has more than 800 children and teens participating in the educational initiative.
