LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An educational initiative led by a Louisville nonprofit focused on supporting children affected by gun violence is expanding to Bardstown.

Christopher 2X's Game Changers has devoted resources to supporting children impacted by gun violence with the Future Healers program, which is a partnership between the Game Changers, UofL Hospital's Trauma Institute and students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to help Louisville children who have been impacted by violence in their neighborhoods to build a better future.

Future Healers Kiddos Medical program is an educational initiative that introduces children to medicine and science as a way to provide opportunity and learning to build upon their future.

The program is now expanding to Bardstown, the first rural expansion in the state. The program for children ages 4 to 13 years old has already expanded to Nashville.

“This is an incredible milestone for the Future Healers Medical Program, surpassing our hopes of expanding into a rural community in the Commonwealth," 2X said in a news release. "We are thrilled to establish this connection with Bardstown, and our founding partners couldn’t be more excited.”

The Future Healers Journey to Wellness workbook was introduced to children in Bardstown. It's a 100-page book that blends fun and learning activities for a unique resource that focuses on wellness and health sciences. University of Louisville School of Medicine students authored the book.

Our Commonwealth, a nonprofit in Bardstown dedicated to youth STEM programming, is now working with Christopher 2X Game Changers. The journal will be shared with 60 children in March, and expand to 90 participants in the fall in partnership with Bardstown City Schools.

"This partnership perfectly aligns with our goal of enhancing our STEM program," Kecia Copeland, executive director of Our Commonwealth, said in a news release. "The workbook will be an invaluable resource to encourage and motivate our students to continue their STEM journey and learn more about the medical field."

According to a news release, the expansion will equip young learners with engaging activities designed to promote well-being, resilience and early STEM interest.

Children in Bardstown will also have the chance to visit UofL Health in Louisville to engage with Future Healers during curriculum sessions.

“The Future Healers Journey to Wellness workbook journal is a fantastic way to teach students about the inner and outer workings of their bodies, as well as how to respect their

own bodies and those of others," Dr. Britta Maciuba, a doctor in Bardstown, said in a news release.
