LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools will be closed again Thursday due to the winter storm.
The school district in Louisville was scheduled to return from a two-week winter break on Monday, but a winter storm moved through the area on Sunday and Monday.
JCPS announced on Sunday evening that class would be canceled on Monday. Then on Monday, the school district announced the cancellation of class for Tuesday and Wednesday.
In a statement Wednesday evening, Carolyn Callahan, the district's chief communications officer, said icy roads and extreme cold temperatures led to Thursday's closure, which will be a traditional snow day with no online learning. Athletic events and extracurricular activities are also canceled.
The district has not yet made a decision about school on Friday, but there is another winter weather system forecasted for the area later this week. Callahan said JCPS will "take several factors into consideration" on Thursday to make a decision for Friday, including the condition of side streets and roads, campus conditions, temperatures and incoming snow.
The district expects to make an announcement about Friday sometime Thursday evening.
Callahan said Tuesday the condition of side streets is a factor in the decision to return to school. The school district has around 40,000 bus riders.
Callahan said on Tuesday all the school buildings still have heat and there haven't been any broken pipes or damage to the buildings.
Because JCPS was on winter break when the storm hit, days off this week are traditional snow days and not virtual instruction.
