LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The way you track your child's Jefferson County Public Schools bus routes will look a little different in the upcoming school year.
JCPS previously used an app called "Edulog" for parents to track bus routes.
But now, parents will have to download a new tracking app called "My Ride K-12" to see where their kids are.
"It's just been great to keep track of him," JCPS parent Maura Binder said.
Binder's son is nonverbal and the old app helped her fill the communication gap while he rode the bus.
"It's just been great because if they're going to be late, I know," she said. "Because he can't call me and tell me that."
But it wasn't perfect.
"We had some issues with the last one where buses break down and it's 6:30 in the morning," Binder said.
"Who's coming to pick up your kid? It's hard because you're waiting for a bus that you don't know is coming."
Other JCPS parents on Facebook echoed some of her thoughts.
One parent said, "The Edulog app quit working for me after Christmas break," but they liked the setup of the new app so far.
Another parent said Edulog was "bugging" and she's "cautiously optimistic" about the new one.
But another parent said, "The app last year worked great. We never missed the bus."
As Binder was setting up My Ride K-12, she didn't notice a lot of changes.
"Looks like it's very similar to the one before," she said.
A JCPS spokesperson said the app will look similar for users, but its accuracy will be improved because it is directly connected to JCPS software, unlike Edulog, which was through a third party.
He said the new app will provide an exact arrival time instead of a window, the substitute bus number if a substitute is called in and a real-time map of where the bus is.
As the new school year approaches, Binder hopes her communication with JCPS and her nonverbal son only improves.
"We haven't used it yet, but if it's like the old one, it's awesome."
