LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Local students competed with custom-built robots at the VEX IQ Robotics Competition Rapid Relay in Louisville on Saturday.

The elementary and middle schools students competed at Holy Spirit School as 20 teams used their robots in teamwork challenges. The tournament focuses on teamwork, skill and a grasp of technology for the custom-built robots.

The robots perform challenges and tasks to gain points. Competitors have the goal to go to the world championship held next spring.

"I am going to do robotics next semester so I wanted to try it out and get a feel for it, plus I am always working with electronics and stuff so I decided to try it out and made it," said Matthew Braun.

Five schools will represent Kentucky at the 2024 VEX World Championships in May.

Many students said they would eventually like to become engineers when they grow up.
