LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As temperatures drop, furnaces can fail, that's why experts say it's time to prepare your home for winter.

WDRB News talked to a specialist on how to stay warm and avoid costly bills and repairs.

It’s cold outside this week as temperatures dropped below freezing. Experts said now is the time to winterize your home, starting with windows and the front door.

Dr. Rick Smith, who downsized to an older home in October, is learning how to keep it warm.

"I’m not sure what updates have been made, but the windows are probably original," Smith said.

Shawn Carroll, a comfort specialist with Bryant Heating and Cooling, said it doesn’t take much to winterize windows.

"If they're not insulated well, the heat can escape, affecting your utility bills," Carroll said.

If the windows don’t need replacing, they’re easy to winterize.

"You can put plastic over them, which is a great barrier to hold the heat in," Carroll said.

People can also use draft stoppers for doors.

"I've seen them where they actually keep the cold air from under your door," said Carroll. "Because under your door, you lose a lot of air."

Carroll also recommends insulating pipes to prevent freezing and having a heating system inspected.

"Clogged filters can cause your furnace to overheat and fail," Carroll said.

Smith, learning along the way, is now focused on changing his furnace filters.

"I need to go do that... like now," Smith said.

Winterization Checklist:

  • Draft stoppers
  • Ice melt
  • Seal strips
  • Insulation tape
  • Window wrap
  • Gutter cleaning scoop
  • Air conditioner cover
  • Faucet covers
  • Plant covers
  • Shrink wrap your windows

Experts say, with the right preparations, you can keep your home warm and your bills low all winter long.
