LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Flu season is in full swing, and the many social gatherings around the holidays can often lead to an uptick in cases.
The Louisville health department reports more than 700 flu cases since September.
Last season, the department reported more than 20,000 cases and 36 flu-related deaths, between September and May, with one of the largest spikes recorded in December.
"The holiday season is the prime time for flu," Jordan Morgan, nurse practitioner, said. "People are gathering and traveling more, families are getting together to celebrate and the flu loves that type of environment, that’s how the flu thrives. It easily transmits to people in closed spaces."
Health officials recommend eating well, exercising, managing your stress and getting enough sleep.
A flu shot can also reduce the risk of catching the flu and reduce the severity of symptoms if you do get sick.
