LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former NFL player and Super Bowl champion spoke with students in Louisville on Monday about the importance of reading.
Malcom Mitchell, who played for the New England Patriots, read his book "The Magician's Hat" to children at King Elementary School. He told the students he was not a strong reader but learned to love it.
Now, Mitchell is an advocate for literacy especially in communities that are underserved. He said the key to success is through books.
"Being an athlete, I figured many people pack the stadiums to cheer on football players, and that's why so many people are inspired to do it," he said. "Well, what if we pack this room and cheer on reading? Hopefully that inspires them to do that."
After ending his career in the NFL in 2019, Mitchell started reading to children. He released his first book in 2016.
