LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Fort Knox soldiers swapped their usual gear for holiday spirit Monday morning during the annual "Toy Ruck," marching miles to deliver gifts to families on post.
Thirteen soldiers led a 12-mile march, carrying ruck sacks packed with toys. More than 200 additional soldiers joined them for the final 2 miles, turning the roadway into a long line of uniforms and holiday spirit.
By the time the group reached the Warrior Warehouse — home to the installation's Santa's Workshop — they delivered more than 300 donated toys. The gifts will be distributed to Fort Knox families who may need extra help this holiday season.
Organizers said the ruck is a chance for soldiers to give back to the same community that supports them year-round and to spread a little joy along the way.
The Toy Ruck has become a growing tradition at Fort Knox, when recruiting soldiers double as Santa's elves for a day.
