LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Free gun locks will be available this week in Louisville.
The Louisville Metro Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods and the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services will give away more than 5,000 premium gun locks, according to a news release Monday. The locks are available on a first-come basis.
The locks are available each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. this week in the main lobby of the L&N building at 908 W. Broadway in the California neighborhood. According to a news release, at least another 1,000 locks will be given to the state's frontline child welfare and family support staffers to encourage child and family safety.
Data from Louisville Metro Police Department reports that more than 950 people in Louisville under the age of 17 have been victims of wanton endangerment since 2022. According to a news release, 15 juveniles juveniles have been victims of accidental shootings, typically self-inflicted. Those victims are between the ages of 2 and 17 years old, with the average being 12 years old.
"Partnering and collaborating with the state, nonprofits and the community as a whole on this issue is paramount," Paul Callanan, OSHN director, said in a news release Monday.
