LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Radcliff, Kentucky, man was charged with murder following the death of an 18-month-old who had been in his care.

Terrance Corbin, 20, was watching the 18-month-old and a 3-year-old at an Elizabethtown home Tuesday afternoon, according to Chris Denham, with the Elizabethtown Police Department.

Police said Corbin called the children's mother at 4 p.m. that day to tell her the 18-month-old was breathing abnormally. A short time later, he called 911 and reported the child wasn't breathing.

Denham said officers responding to the call "recognized the child to be in dire condition and in need of immediate medical treatment," and transported her to the hospital.

The child was airlifted to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, where tests and medical evaluations revealed she had "substantial swelling and bleeding in the soft tissue around her scalp and face, subdural hemorrhaging at multiple sites, and multiple skull fractures."

Denham said a pediatrician specializing in child abuse called the toddler's skull fractures "the worst they had encountered during their time practicing medicine."

The child died from her injuries Thursday afternoon, Denham said, calling her death "an unimaginably heartbreaking case."

"The physician that specializes in child abuse at the children's hospital said that is one of the worst cases of abuse they'd ever observed in their time practicing medicine," Denham said.

Corbin was arrested and charged with murder. He's being held at the Hardin County Detention Center.

"A crime like this is the most heinous, despicable, disgusting crime that law enforcement is tasked with investigating," Denham said. "How could you do that to a baby? I'm not sure."
