CLOVERPORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Officials are looking into a Kentucky funeral home that's accused of providing cremation services without the proper licensing.

Cloverport is a small town of about 1,200 in Breckinridge County. Cloverport Funeral Home, about an hour-and-a-half from downtown Louisville, is still open, but there's no cremation services there because of a temporary restraining order.

According to a news release from Attorney General Russell Coleman's office, on Jan. 2, the office received information that led to an investigation of Cloverport Funeral Home "revealing that the facility had failed to register to operate a crematory and was providing cremation services without a license in violation of Kentucky law."

Cloverport Police Chief Chris Woosley said the department is made up of two people and assisted with the investigation. He said a different funeral home called him with concerns about Cloverport Funeral Home, located at 208 E. Main St., and he then reached out to the Attorney General's Office.

"I knew that they had opened the crematory March of last year," Woosley said. "They had came in here and got their paperwork from the city, so I just assumed that everything else was up to par, basically, as far as with the state and everything."

The Attorney General's Office said the Cloverport Funeral Home is accused of performing more than 300 cremations since April of last year with unlicensed cremation chamber.

"Basically, it was just they were operating the crematory without state license," Woosley said.

Records show Anthony Oxendine owns Cloverport Funeral Home. Multiple attempts to reach him Wednesday went unanswered.

This investigation has now led to a halt of cremation services at the funeral home. Woosley said the temporary restraining order was served last week, and the investigation is still open.

"Just be patient with us," Woosley said. "We have an open investigation with the crematory. The funeral home is still in operation. We've met with them. They've been very open and helpful on everything we've asked for."

The Attorney General's Office said it's unable to comment further Wednesday.
